Third Party Car Insurance in Malaysia

The minimum legally required cover in Malaysia — here is what third party insurance does and does not cover.

Third party car insurance is the minimum legally required motor insurance in Malaysia under the Road Transport Act 1987. It is the most basic level of cover and is significantly cheaper than comprehensive insurance, but it provides no protection for damage to your own vehicle.

What Third Party Insurance Covers in Malaysia

Malaysian third party motor insurance covers: bodily injury and death of third parties (other people) caused by your vehicle, and damage to third-party property caused by your vehicle. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle, theft of your vehicle, or fire damage to your vehicle.

Third Party Fire and Theft

A middle option between pure third party and comprehensive, Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) adds cover for your own vehicle if it is stolen or destroyed by fire, while still not covering accidental damage to your own vehicle. For vehicles with moderate value that are at some theft risk, TPFT may be a cost-effective middle ground.

When Third Party Cover Is Appropriate

Third party cover is most appropriate for: older vehicles with low market value (where the cost of comprehensive cover is disproportionate to the vehicle's value), financially constrained drivers who need to meet the legal minimum at the lowest cost, or drivers with a very low-value vehicle who can self-fund repair costs if needed.

Road Tax Renewal

A valid motor insurance policy (at minimum third party) is required to renew your road tax in Malaysia. Your insurer will issue a cover note or e-cover note confirming valid cover, which is presented at the time of road tax renewal at Pos Malaysia, JPJ, or online.

Key Guidance

In Malaysia, if the market value of your vehicle falls below a certain threshold relative to the comprehensive premium, switching from comprehensive to third party or TPFT may be financially rational. A common rule of thumb: if the annual comprehensive premium exceeds 10% of the vehicle's market value, reassess whether full comprehensive cover is cost-effective.
