Third Party Motor Insurance in Nigeria

Every vehicle in Nigeria must have third-party insurance by law. Here is everything you need to know.

Third party motor insurance is legally compulsory for all vehicles in Nigeria under the Insurance Act 2003 and the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act. It is the minimum cover required before a vehicle can be used on Nigerian public roads, and is enforced by the Nigerian Police Force and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).

What Third Party Insurance Covers in Nigeria

Nigerian third party motor insurance covers: bodily injury or death of third parties caused by your vehicle, and damage to third-party property up to the regulated limit. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle, theft of your vehicle, or your own injuries as the driver.

NAICOM and Licensed Insurers

Only insurers licensed by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) may legally issue third-party motor insurance certificates in Nigeria. The NAICOM website and the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID) at niid.com.ng allow verification of both insurer licences and individual insurance certificates. Always purchase from a NAICOM-licensed insurer.

The Problem of Fake Insurance Certificates

Counterfeit motor insurance certificates are a significant problem on Nigerian roads. Fake certificates look genuine but are not registered on the NIID and provide no valid cover. If involved in an accident with a fake certificate, you have no insurance protection. Always verify your certificate on the NIID platform after purchase.

Penalties for Driving Without Insurance

Driving without valid third-party insurance in Nigeria is a criminal offence under the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act. Penalties include fines and potential vehicle impoundment. The Nigerian Police Force and VIO enforce this at roadblocks. A valid insurance certificate must be produced on demand.

Key Guidance

After purchasing your third-party insurance certificate, verify it immediately on the NIID (niid.com.ng) using the certificate number. If it does not appear in the database, it is not valid — contact your insurer or purchase from a different NAICOM-licensed provider.
